Breeds of Livestock - California Variegated Mutant Sheep
Twinning and lambing ease are part of the breed emphasis and if left with the ram, ewes are known to breed while suckling lambs.. . .
High quality variegated fine spinning fleeces are in demand, as there are not many of them on the market.
. . .
With the wide variety of color patterns, including dark gray, black, brown, moorit, and spotted, not excluding the barred face badger pattern typical to the original C.V.M.'s, a breed description has been difficult.
. . .
Body The C.V.M. face is generally free of wool and covered with soft hair, although sometimes wool is found on the forehead.
. . .
Two years later a ram lamb of the same barred pattern was born and when crossed with the ewe, the resulting offspring were of the same color pattern.
. . .
In 1982, the flock was totally dispersed, numbering approximately 75 and selling to over a dozen buyers from throughout the state of California.

April 29, 2011 ASI Reveals the Let's Grow with twoPLUS Campaign The U.S. sheep industry is finding itself amidst an encouraging time: lamb prices are at an all-time high, the wool market is the highest it’s been since 1989 and the cull ewe and pelt markets are very lucrative.

Peg explains that after the sheep are shorn, the fleece must be skirted which is removing the large dirt particles, etc. Then it's sent to the Still River Mill, a local mill in Eastford, Connecticut, that processes the fleece to order.
. . .
Fleece measuring less than 20µ in thickness is considered a very fine fleece.

The fine wooled Rambouillet is a French merino sheep, and the Romney is an old long wool breed from Great Britain which has lived in the Romney Marsh for as long as anyone knows. Romeldale fleece is fine and can be any color, or spotted.. . .
We started our flock, a few years ago, with 3 CVM ewes and 1 CVM ram from Washington state. We have kept our ewe lambs and have added 2 Romeldale rams. One of these rams is colored in shades of charcoal gray and the other is spotted with gray, black, and white.
. . .
In 1982, the flock was dispersed -- to California residents, only --and the breed was almost lost.
. . .
CVMs are listed as a rare breed and there are a number of people who are dedicated to its continuance.

It spins into a beautiful yarn suitable for next-to-skin wear.. . .
CVM colors include gray, black, brown and moorit and, unlike most breeds, they darken as they mature rather than fade.
. . .
CVM fiber is fine with a well defined crimp, free of kemp, a 3-6 inch staple and a micron count in the 60's.
. . .
CVM sheep are typically badger-faced, with a ligher body and darker belly and head.

Spencer and the Sexton family, who crossed Romney and Rambouliet stock.

Mature rams are large and virile, able to cover more than the average number of ewes.
. . .
We also like that they are a dual purpose breed and we can market the sheep for wool or meat.

Twinning and ease of lambing are considered impor-tant breed attributes.. . .
The Sextons selected the sheep for high rates of twinning, maternal ability, and non-seasonal reproduction.
. . .
The wool of the Sexton flocks was so highly regarded that for many years the entire clip was sold to Pendleton Mills.
. . .
Soft- handling wool was also a priority, as was fleece weight (ten to fifteen pounds) with a grade of 60s to 64s.
. . .
With the exception of color, CVMs and Romeldales have similar characteristics.

About Us - National CVM Conservancy
Purebred CVM/Romeldales Fleece darker and softer with ageBradford Count: 60-64Wide variety of colors Today there are fewer than 20 breeders in the country, and we welcome all whose passion is to participate in assisting the National CVM Conservancy's effort to preserve the original genetics. Saving such a worthy piece of American history is an important endeavor, as fanciers today most certainly would NOT be able to duplicate Glen Eidman's extraordinarily-selective breeding program used to develop the breed.Today, Glen's son Mark continues to be a pivotal and important spokesman for the preservation of his father's incredible living legacy.. . .
When the ewe and ram were crossed, the resulting offspring also had the same unique color pattern. Through subsequent breeding and further mutations, the CVM breed was painstakingly developed by Glen Eidman over a 15- year period. During that time, Mr. Eidman did not sell any of the CVM sheep, in order to maintain complete control over the breed's development. Upon retirement in 1982, only the top 2/3 of the flock was dispersed. CVM/Romeldale sheep are the most critically rare breed of sheep in the US today according to the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy.
. . .
Our mission is to preserve this most unique breed as part of the heritage we hold in this country today. We invite everyone's suggestions and participation in this incredible journey together.

The other dominant trait in this breed is that the sheep’s wool softens as it gets older.

Using the above traditional CVM markings as an example: If the animal has 5 or more of the 7 traditional markings, it would be considered a CVM.

Mr. Spencer crossed imported New Zealand Marsh Romney rams with his Rambouillet ewes to increase the staple and length of fleece and to improve the carcass quality.
