Frank McCourt - Telegraph - Telegraph.co.uk - Telegraph online ...

In Teacher Man (2005) McCourt chronicled the subsequent three decades he spent trying to win the attention and respect of hard-bitten teenagers in New York City schools.
. . .
They had a daughter but the union was tumultuous and ended after 18 years of almost constant warfare.
. . .
But it struck a chord with readers around the world as much for its unsentimental style, told from a child's point of view, as for its compelling grimness.
. . .
The row over Angela's Ashes was reignited by the publication of 'Tis, which completely ignored his second marriage to psychotherapist Cheryl Floyd.
. . .
Life chez the McCourts, as one critic observed, "makes Bleak House look like a Marx Brothers movie".
. . .
But many locals in Limerick did not take kindly to having their city's reputation besmirched by stories of the scabby-eyed McCourt children reduced to living on bread dipped in tea and feeding the fire in their damp-sodden home with wooden furnishings and coal picked off the street.

MLB: Frank McCourt Tried to Take $20 Million from Dodgers in April ...

McCourt says the club wouldn't have financial issues if Major League Baseball would approve the TV deal he's negotiated with FOX.
. . .
I cannot believe he even has the chutzpah to carry on this ridiculous fight to retain control of the team through Bankruptcy action and the myopia to be so delusional to think that the fans of the Dodgers would like to see him retain ownership of that club.
. . .
In mid-April, McCourt took a $30-million personal loan from Fox, using $20 million to fund the first payrolls of the season.
. . .
Sadly we're left dealing with the reality that McCourt won't give up his legal fight until he's exhausted every option.
. . .
He wanted control of the money so he could screw around with it as he pleased.
. . .
From the LA Times, who seems to be spoon fed their scoops from MLB: The league also alleged in [legal documents filed Wednesday] that McCourt tried to take $20 million out of the Dodgers in late April, amid the team's payroll crisis.

Frank McCourt to Bud Selig: I can never thank you enough - latimes.com

Kemp reached true elite status only last year, and the Dodgers are counting on the 2011 version and not the 2010 one.
. . .
Kemp's salary, compared to subsequent deals signed by Albert Pujols ($240 million) and Prince Fielder ($214 million), could prove a relative bargain if he continues to produce anywhere near his 2011 level.
. . .
Which is true, of course, but if you're about to be the new owner, no doubt you would like to be the one negotiating the salaries.
. . .
Normally if a team does make that kind of commitment, the contract is extended to at least buy out a year or two of free agency.
. . .
Bankruptcy is designed to make sure creditors are paid, and you have to wonder at this point if there was ever any danger of that not happening.
. . .
Newhan said the Joe Torre-Rick Caruso group has picked up the backing of a member of the David Thomson family, the wealthiest in Canada.

Frank McCourt versus Fox: He's running out of partners to turn on ...

Seems it just doesn't pay to be an ally of McCourt, though it certainly can prove costly.

The contract stipulates a 45-day window at the end of next year as an exclusive negotiating period for the next contract.

Frank McCourt, Whose Irish Childhood Illuminated His Prose, Is ...

The ruse did not work.A series of laboring jobs followed, interrupted by the Korean War.
. . .
A year later he began teaching at McKee Vocational High School on Staten Island, an eye-opening experience that he recalled, in often hilarious detail, in his third volume of memoirs, “Teacher Man.” In his first week, an unruly student threw a homemade sandwich on the floor, an act that astonished Mr. McCourt not so much for its brazenness as for the waste of good food.
. . .
Thirty-nine of them died, whereupon Mr. McCourt taped the lifeless bodies to their perches.
. . .
The cause was metastatic melanoma, said Mr. McCourt’s brother, the writer Malachy McCourt.
. . .
Although criticized as lumpy and episodic, the book was praised for its humane inquiry into the role of the teacher and the possibilities of education.
. . .
Not to be outdone, Mr. McCourt’s younger brother Malachy, an actor, brought out two volumes of his own memoirs: “A Monk Swimming” (1998), which also made the best-seller list, and “Singing My Him Song” (2000).

PBS Online: Only A Teacher: Teachers Today: Frank McCourt

On one side of the cafeteria the old timers were gathered -- they're giving me advice, and they're saying, traditional and conservative and they've been through it, and they say you know, "You're the boss in that classroom, you tell them what to do, don't ever tell them anything about yourself, nothing private." Then I'd go to the other side of the cafeteria, and there are the younger teachers who were progressive, you know, students of John Dewey, and they'd say, "Well, you know, these kids are people.
. . .
And you try to do it, and like any kid who has homework to do, "I'll get up in the morning and do it." Well you know you're not going to do 170 papers, so you do what you can, and try to get it back to them, but the load never lightened.
. . .
When I got out of the army I had the GI Bill.
. . .
These girls would come from, I had one class of 35 girls come in these white dresses, uniforms or whatever they are, with hair, hairdos, these beehive hairdos, where you could raise a sparrow in each family.
. . .
And some of the kids in my class discovered these papers, and they were overcome: "This was my father, this was my uncle, this was my cousin Vinny," and so on.
. . .
I knew nothing about American kids and their strange tribal ways, and it seemed to me that they were throbbing with sexuality, which you wouldn't find in Ireland, because they'd knock it out of you.
