A confused book), was published.Mayröcker was loosely associated with the »Vienna Group«, but from the beginning broke away from their »concrete poetry«.

1939-2003 Suhrkamp Frankfurt/Main, 2003 Und ich schüttelte einen Liebling Suhrkamp Frankfurt/ Main, 2005 Friederike Mayröcker was born in Vienna in 1924. After being drafted as an air force aide during World War II, she took »external A-levels« in 1950, having already worked as an English teacher at Viennese high schools since 1946. Her first poems appeared in Vienna's avant-garde journal »Plan«.

The seemingly obsessive nature of Mayröckers gathering, arranging and transforming of materials is a quality she shares with another of the master collagists of the twentieth century, Joseph Cornell.. . .
Phrases in her poetry seem to me to be strikingly similar to some of Cornells diary entries where he records his epiphanies and manic episodes, and the sense of their work as a gift, or as an attempt to set up an exchange or conversation with others whether living or dead, is also something they have in common.
. . .
Mayröcker is also a prolific writer of books of poetic and emotionally engaging but emphatically nonnarrative prose; nowhere in the world, she has claimed, can she see evidence of story.
. . .
It provides an excellent introduction to her work and a quite unique reading experience.
. . .
Two of the most frequently used words when attempting to describe that experience seem to be hallucinatory and magical.
. . .
The range of her poems, and the baroque nature of her imagery, is dizzying: we are taken, often within the space of a line or two, from surrealist fantasy to detailed naturalistic observation, from a reminder to see the oculist to heartfelt elegy.

In the 1960s she was associated with the experimental "Vienna Group." She has received many prestigious literary prizes in both Austria and Germany, and, in 1997, the International Prize of The America Awards.. . .
All presided over by Beethoven whose "Heiligenstadt Testament" is evoked by the title (literally: "Saints' Asylum": a reference to Robert Schumann's years of insanity).

In luxurious fullness she fans out memories of her darling, memories she weaves into an experience you can almost see and touch.. . .
Published only after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1989, the text is still unavailable in English but has recently been translated into German.
. . .
But every story which she allows to ring out is granted a poetical openness through the figurative repetition and subsidence of the always different contexts.
. . .
She does not permit a casual flick through the pages, or a reading which is not emotionally engaged.
. . .
Somehow it has to do with something, but then it collapses, dissolves.
. . .
The book's leitmotiv is the poetic transformation of the experience of text, which tranfixes the reader and holds him in permanent emotion, in permanent contact.

in|ad|ae|qu|at : Angelika Kaufmann . Twisting the Text
Not a traditional script , which looks away from itself in order to transmit something else – “content” .. . .
“what is to be seen – what is to be heard” once again becomes something to be written , something to be read .
. . .
There “where something is missing” , there where the obligation to decipher that is instilled in us at quite an early age encounters an empty surface , that is where imagination and therefore also ( personal ) projection is inserted .

On the contrary , the quiet drama of tension and relaxation , writing out and paring down , emphasising and taking breath occurs within the individual letters … … If I had an endless piece of writing paper, so that I didn’t always have to span a new sheet of paper in the typewriter and put the previous one down, namely the most extreme version, namely that of a meditative submersion which liberates us from the racing of time … ( Friederike Mayröcker 03 ) ||| III.

That is how the poetical message-in-a-bottle is enciphered in the Gutenberg galaxy : the world of the artwork spans between cover , binding and endpaper .

Chicago Review
Chicago Review's quite plausible suggestion is "wanker literature." The journal has just put out a double issue devoted to (mostly recent) contemporary German-language writing, titled "New Writing in German" (Chicago Review 48:2/3, Summer 2002).. . .
Well-known translators, including Christopher Middleton and Rosmarie Waldrop, have made sure that many of the texts find a second home in America.
. . .
Martin The recent "boom" in German-language literature that began in the 1990s has been marked by the resurgence of compelling narratives and well-told tales, the resuscitation of an experimental spirit in lyric poetry, and a widespread and profound engagement not only with the realities of contemporary life in the new Europe, but also with the variety of histories in which that contemporary life is grounded.
. . .
New Writing: From German in English Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, 7.8.02 The literary journal Chicago Review has now brought out a volume titled "New Writing in German" representing poetry and prose by younger (as well as older) German authors in English translation.

"schtzngrmm" is an experimental poem in which he tells the sounds of war only with combinations of letters, which sound like gunfires or detonating missiles.

In the poem ‘Rape’, for example, an emerging field of rape that surfaces in the wordlessness of the narrating subject triggers an avalanche of words that link seeing and seen, subject and object to one another in a highly musical diction: “and then this: rape,// hard edge, clean line, scattered, dense rape work,/ hatched and cross-hatched rape, the field fills, the screen fills with rape,/ rape up to your hairline, brimful of rape”.
