Jack Micheline - AMERICAN MUSEUM OF BEAT ART

At the end of his life Micheline lived in San Francisco, writing poetry and painting while still being ignored by the bigger presses.
. . .
The reason was that an earlier girlfriend gave birth to a child that was Micheline's (it was a boy and is his only child).
. . .
Micheline showed his poems to Kerouac who began yelling, "Wow!
. . .
Jack Micheline Jack Micheline Born: November 6, 1929Place of Birth: The BronxDied: February 27, 1998Place of Death: San Francisco  I never wanted to be a poet.I just wanted to be a human being.Anyone who wants to be a poet is out of his mind.Either you are one or you are not. Most poets are not poets.
. . .
He thinks he's living in "Siberia in the United States" - the loveless hell of people trying to get by in this greedy world.
. . .
Shortly after that he showed his poems to the publisher of Troubadour Press.

Micheline's most recent publication was Sixty-seven Poems for Downtrodden Saints, published by Matt Gonzales in 1997 (FMSBW Press), and republished as a second edition in 1999 with many additional poems, photos and images that did not appear in the first edition.  Click here for more information about Sixty Seven Poems for Downtrodden Saints.

His brother, Ed Silver (Puerto Rico), son, Vince Silvaer, daughter-in-law, Sheri (Lauver) Silvaer, granddaughter, Nicole Solai Silvaer, and grandson, Dustin Andrew Silvaer (Tucson, AZ), survive him.       Return to Homepage Send mail to questions@jack-micheline.com with questions or comments about this web site.
. . .
After quarreling with his father, he changed his first name to "Jack" in honor of the socialist writer Jack London, and created "Micheline" by exptrapolating from the maiden name of his mother, Helen Mitchell (a.k.a.  Yetta Klang).  Informally educated, he identified closely with the traditions of American vagabond poets like Vachel Lindsay and Maxwell Bodenheim, and he moved to Greenwich Village in the 1950's to find an outlet for his poetry.
. . .
Kerouac liked Micheline's work and did him the favor, referring to him as the "Doctor Johnson Zen Master Magee of Innisfree", punning on the title of Yeats' famous poem and "in us free", meaning that Micheline was free inside himself.

Jack Micheline 2007 cosmic Player Plate at the COSMIC BASEBALL ...

Notwithstanding some of his contentious attitudes regarding the Beat generation he is considered eligible for this team.
. . .
The so-called Beat consciousness had emerged some ten years earlier in the groves of Columbia University.
. . .
That was the same year his son (Harold/Harvey/Jack) was born.
. . .
He now called himself "Jack", to honor the American writer Jack London.
. . .
In fact, Jack Micheline did not get along with his father who had lost much during the stock market chaos of 1929.

Jack Micheline :: English Language Poet :: English Poetry

Though a poet of the Beat generation, Micheline characterized the Beat movement as a product of media hustle, and hated being categorized as a Beat poet.
. . .
Born Harold Martin Silver, he took his pen name from writer Jack London and his mother's maiden name.
. . .
To be a poet is to be: Poetry (2000); Implosion Press.
. . .
He lived on the fringe of poverty, writing about hookers, drug addicts, blue collar workers, and the dispossessed.
. . .
He was also a painter, working primarily with gouache in a self-taught, primitive style he picked up in Mexico City.
. . .
His name is synonymous with street artists, underground writers, and "outlaw" poets.

Margery Snyder More often than not, if you wandered into a bar in North Beach or the Mission District in San Francisco in the late 1980s, early 1990s, you’d run into Jack Micheline, and he’d trade a broadsheet poem or sing his “It’s the Dead” song for a drink.

A tavern where no cultured poet dares lay academic intestines bare for fear of guts a bar where no thought lives whose truth is hidden behind wooly words a saloon where any poem is only as good as a turn of the head, quiet vocabulary of the eyes a roomful of strangers come to drink and listen each to his own voice.

At some point in the early 70s Jack moved out to San Francisco and we kept in touch by mail.
. . .
I told him about the books used as fuel and sent him the poem.
. . .
Then one night I got a call from Jack, drinking in a Village bar with the poet Dan Murray who had my phone number.
. . .
For drink and food Jack would take a poem or two in typescript, make copies, staple the pages inside a brown folder, and on the cover write the poem's title with a marker.
