Malcolm Bradbury wrote in The New York Times Book Review, " [Dahl's] characters are usually ignoble: he knows the dog beneath the skin, or works hard to find it." Yet this talent for finding, and exposing, the nastier sides of grown-up behavior served him well in writing for children.

Theater review: ‘James and the Giant Peach’ from Orlando ...
Best is Dahl’s classic “Eating the Peach,” which emphasizes his delicious dialogue: “But don’t forget to sprinkle them with just a pinch of grime.” Lilting background music is heard throughout the show, which helps raise the energy level but, at least from the back of the Rep’s Universal Orlando Theatre, often competes with the actors’ voices.. . .
For those who have seen the Tim Burton-produced 1996 film for Disney, this adaptation does not use the movie’s songs, though there are musical interludes in which the characters rhythmically speak Dahl’s prose, mostly clearly, though too many actors speaking at once muddies the effect.

Palm on April, 16 2011 11:18 PM Discuss This: Comments(0) | Add to del.icio.us | Digg it Miss Spider (Sarah-Lee Dobbs) and Earthworm (Chantry Banks) befriend young James (Shane Rhoads) in "James and the Giant Peach." (photo by Eric Blackmore) The two stars of Roald Dahl’s “James and the Giant Peach” are young orphan James Henry Trotter, of course, and that magical, enormous fruit.
. . .
The darker side of Dahl’s story, his bits of the macabre among the whimsy, are downplayed: James’ parents die offstage, and the rhino that kills them is a comic creation.
. . .
The humans don’t miss out on the cute costume touches, either, from James’ short trousers and knee-high socks to Aunt Sponge’s pink piggy slippers.
