Poetry in Design: The Art of Harry Leith-Ross
Leith-Ross believed passionately that the design (or composition) of a canvas was of paramount importance for its success.. . .
Patterning, through repeated or converging lines, is a common motif in his work: a long fence cutting through vertical trees, shafts of raking sunlight, boats lined up in a canal, or the translucent white edges of windows or even blades of grass.
. . .
Leith-Ross painted many different subjects throughout his life, but landscape was his first love, whether he was working in Europe, Canada, or one of his favorite American locales.
. . .
Michener Art Museum in New Hope, PA presents Poetry in Design: The Art of Harry Leith-Ross, an exhibition about one of the most decorated and prolific Pennsylvania Impressionist artists from May 12 through October 1, 2006 in the Della Penna Gallery. Leith-Ross (1886-1973) became renowned for his vibrant, carefully composed oil paintings and for his transparent watercolor technique in the tradition of the eighteenth century.
. . .
It was during this time that he met John Folinsbee, a noted painter of the Pennsylvania Impressionist School.
. . .
He also cautioned them to focus their efforts on conveying a mood as well as distilling their ideas into a single concept before beginning to paint; as he said, a canvas must express "just one thing." His work shows a great emphasis on visual design as well as mood, and he was critical of impressionist paintings that relied on only light and shadow.

Harry Leith-Ross | Questroyal - Art Dealer NYC | American Art Dealer
From 1919-1925 he became involved in the Rockport Art Association in Rockport, Massachusetts as a founder and teacher.. . .
He also loved the gray days and moodiness of winter”.6 Leith-Ross, like many other members of the New Hope art colony, was not constrained under the tenets of a particular movement but committed to the development of his own unique individual style.
. . .
He also displayed Impressionistic qualities through a bright color palette, thick impasto brushwork, and a vivid attention to surface textures and patterning.7 In 1931, Leith-Ross also began experimenting with watercolor.
. . .
There he seems to get into his impression the very essence of the old-fashioned American country house, the worn barn and its more or less unkempt surroundings.
. . .
Between 1914 and 1935, Leith-Ross visited and painted in New Hope frequently and would divide his time both there and at Woodstock.
