Book review: Danny Danziger and Mark McCrum's *The Whatchamacallit ...
With The Whatchamacallit at your side, you can turn a birthday party into an educational opportunity by explaining to your children that dragées are a symbol of prosperity in some countries.. . .
Some of the entries in this light-hearted collection aren’t really obscure; ‘contrail,’ for instance, is familiar to most fourth-graders, and the inclusion of ‘bolero’ is probably explained by the fact that the authors are men.
. . .
There’s probably a name for people who aren’t interested in linguistic trivia, but the authors failed to include that one in this collection.
. . .
Ah, but even those of us who’ve worn boleros and who follow ice dancing probably don’t know the full history of the word.
. . .
Danziger and McCrum start each entry with the quick definition than wander off into near stream-of-consciousness as they explain the origin of worlds like ‘cutwater,’ ‘scarpetta,’ and ‘grawlix.’ That’s the added value in The Whatchamacallit: the authors don’t just give a Webster’s definition; they enrich each word with history, alternate meanings, and amusing anecdotes.

Castaway 2000 - Mark McCrum - Review - Castaway 2000: the book
The rather lengthy book (382 pages) begins with the conception of the programme idea, and outlines briefly some details of the selection process.. . .
It's a shame its only in hardback form so far, and therefore quite expensive, but I notice that it is presently (Jan 2001) available at half price online from http://www.uk.bol.com Summary: More reviews in the field of Non-Fiction Book Please read this.
. . .
The series may have been a psychological experiment in itself, but it is also interesting to see just how nosy viewers and readers have become - it is easy to feel that we really "know" the people involved.
. . .
Was this a "failing" of the community itself?

This one comes from an Italian called Marco, and I thought I'd share it.
. . .
That's the reason why women love Italian men. They love other men too but no one has our reputation and other men from other nationalities are always trying to make fun of us or actually embarrass us but they often do it because they know the difference.
. . .
I don't remember at what point of the book you mention something about Italians being just MAMA-BOY and to be helpless Playboy.

Each of these brave men tells their story here, along with that of the extraordinary expedition itself - the rigorous training, the meticulous preparation, and of course, the final, awe- inspiring journey across the ice.. . .
And all the time, they had to be alert for signs of the notoriously aggressive Polar Bears that roam the desolate landscape.

Once they'd ventured inside the arctic circle they had to contend with new challenges.

Little did they know that their idea would ultimately gain global attention, and royal endorsement.

He bought the bakery in 1871 and made the popular pies in tin baking dishes which could be returned to get back a 5-cent deposit.

The majority of the book is amuzing and informative, offering insights into the punctual interrobang, the noisy borborygmus, the digital dongle, and the interruptive tmesis.
