McHugh, China Mountain Zhang 2 people liked it like “Sydney did not believe in life after death, but in her experience, admitting this could lead to long and complicated discussions in which people seem to think that since she did not believe in God or the afterlife, there was nothing to stop her from becoming an ax murderer.” - Maureen F.

Article: Interview: Maureen F. McHugh, by Pat Stansberry
I think that I was in fifth grade when I found Andre Norton, stories about people who thought they were ugly ducklings who had mutant powers.. . .
I read Poul Anderson's Brain Wave and I remember it as really astonishing.
. . .
At the beginning of the first section of Nekropolis, the first line from the mother is, "All of my children are taller than I am." I like that moment because it suggests a certain kind of pride.
. . .
And there's some high literature that is science fiction influenced.
. . .
I think that's a reaction to the fact that there's their stuff and there's our stuff.
. . .
"Gee, professor, what does this strange knob do?" MFM: Right, so now you can have a character who is pretending to be a boy, who notices all of the things the boys do, interacting with everyday stuff.

Life as the Evil Stepmother, a cautionary tale.We joke about me being the evil stepmother.. . .
If it is the human condition, is a fault in the neurological wiring?
. . .
Maybe we sometimes survive because we sleep late rather than go out early and get killed.
. . .
Depressed people are probably less energetic, less likely to be the ones who go over the hill and explore.
. . .
Sometimes, as it is in Tolkien, the order is a less glorious order--maybe you've got men in charge instead of elves with all the reduction in aesthetics that implies--you know, instead of palaces among the trees we've got Elvis paintings on black velvet.
. . .
And that idea was that romances are porn for women.

China Mountain Zhang — Maureen F. McHugh | Martin’s Booklog
Zhang on the other hand, well, he'd like to go there if not for that whole being gay carrying the death penalty thing.. . .
We're still sort of getting used to China as the new Japan, but you can see McHugh's vision of the future in every Boy's Own technology documentary Discovery Channel runs on the wonderful skyscrapers and high speed trains of Shanghai...
. . .
There's drama in these stories, but it's the drama of everyday life, of people and families struggling to make a living and find a way to survive and thrive in an uncertain future.
. . .
Interspersed with his story are chapters devoted to several other characters, all connecting at some point to Zhang's.
. . .
That may even be rarer in science fiction than being gay is...
. . .
Because of this drama Zhang is forced to look for other work and driven out of his comfortable half- life in New York, first off to a stint at Baffin Island as a construction technician in a Canadian research station, then to mainland China to study.

No Feeling of Falling
There is something in me that is incredibly facsinated and soothed by discussions of craft.. . .
I work in an industry so new, that even while several million people have actually been involved in ARGs, (or immersive fiction or interactive experiences, or whatever you want to call it) far more haven't.
. . .
Many of them, dressed in scrubs, or jeans and casual clothes, or uniforms, are walking to or from bus stops.
. . .
"Optimism is an occupational hazard of programming, feedback is the treatment." Beth and I have worked together on some things and she knows this a lot better than I do.
. . .
Now I'll be living in an apartment, and talking to said husband and dogs by Skype.
. . .
Which she doesn't do near enough of because she is so involved in editing and publishing Angle Magazine, a art magazine in Cleveland, and the film work she does.

As with Janna, though, the book is not interested in being categorized as just science fiction or social realism or fantasy or historical fiction or postcolonial fiction or transgender fiction or literary fiction or young adult.
. . .
Instead, the actions of the characters largely respond to the various social and economic problems that exist on the planet, which include many contemporary issue for middle and lower class communities such as sex and sexual identity, drug use, and the simple struggle to make ends meet, find a job, and raise a child.

Soon the threat of retribution is not enough to keep Hariba from defying law and reason to get what she wants.
. . .
Her articles and short stories are all over the map.

Perhaps we should listen more closely to what the objects of our sympathy are saying and not what we are hearing.

Because McHugh never takes the easy way out; she tackles tough subject matter and she does it brilliantly.

But McHugh has considered it, and it becomes crucial to the book.
. . .
She doesn’t get along that well with the mistress of her household, and she has met a biological construct (a harni, in the derisive), also of the household, who has fallen in love with her.
. . .
Fans of McHugh’s superb debut, China Mountain Zhang, will find this familiar.
. . .
I also enjoyed how the story continues past the point of reaching Spain.
. . .
I see Nekropolis mainly as a character study, although of course the slice of life approach needs an interesting subject to examine.

At the same time as wrestling with her cultural identity, she is also struggling with her gender identity.. . .
Here McHugh moves from interrogating the life of a refugee to the life of an immigrant: the paternalism of the public sector, the indifference of the private sector and the chaotic, compromised support of other people like her.
. . .
It hurt when he finally put it in me, and I didn't like it but didn't say anything.
. . .
(p 291) At the same time, she is much more comfortable in her own skin.

("A lot of us are kin to that clan," she is told.) Once the need for such subterfuge becomes less pressing, however, she finds it impossible to drop the disguise: My stomach tightened and ached, and I felt myself breathing.
. . .
I felt myself draw breath instead and it wasn't enough.
