Warming Up | Richard Herring.com
You only get one shot and every time a line passes and you don't do it the best you've ever done it a tiny bit of your soul dies.. . .
It was a properly lovely London moment, made all the better by my own cynicism to all the parties involved.A part of me wished that I could walk up to them next and ask to have a go as well, but I worried they'd say, "Sorry, you're obviously a drunk, old, homeless man.
. . .
Leave us alone." And I couldn't risk falling off the rope and breaking my leg.Young people get a hard time, mainly because old people envy them their youth and their freedom and all the sex that we are imagining they are having.
. . .
My own prejudices were firing off in all directions and I don't know how I would have responded to this if I had been them - letting a probably drunk woman on to a tightrope was maybe not the greatest of ideas.
. . .
I'd had four nights off from the show and it seemed weirdly unfamiliar in places.

They smoked cigarettes on their haunches and occasionally broke off to practice juggling.

And once again, he dredges up the amusing writings of his teenage self – in this instance a pompous poem about a sexed-up lad whom virginal Richard encountered on a trans-European InterRail train. But if there's not exactly a shock of the new, Herring's disquisition on love is reliably entertaining.

Richard Herring – What Is Love Anyway? Review
Want the opportunity to write for WhatCulture and have your work seen by over a million readers a month?. . .
What Is Love Anyway? is on tour across the UK now, see http://richardherring.com/gigs/ for dates.
. . .
Here Herring delves deeply into his personal life and family history in such a disarmingly honest and confessional way that there are moments of startlingly awkward honesty and profound reflection that you feel you’ve been invited to eavesdrop on a very intimate discussion, as Herring dismantles and analyses his past relationships and his own perspective on relationships there’s much that is utterly relatable and seemingly often unsaid.
. . .
His reading, and criticism, of a poem he wrote called ‘Tom’s Life’ about a young guy he met whilst camping who lost his virginity aged 14 and was currently bedding a string of girls is a funny look at Herring’s then high and mighty ideals of what love was, and Herring is the first to indicate that perhaps young Herring was actually wishing he had Tom’s life; which, to be fair, years later he did.
. . .
Of the four stand-up shows of Herring’s I’ve seen this is by far the finest, moreso than any of the others it takes a universal theme and explores it in a way that is both deeply personal and completely accessible, though Herring’s stories about his – and his families – relationships are completely autobiographical there is so much that is, often worryingly, relatable and at times you feel like you’re up on stage confessing your heart out as much as Herring is.
. . .
Review November 17, 2011 9:41 am Owain Paciuszko Arts no comments  Rating: Richard Herring’s parents met when they were 13 years old and have been together ever since, it was because of this the young Richard Herring strongly believed in love, the kind of love where you are destined to meet one person who will be the love of your life and you will stay with them forever.

Richard Herring – review | Stage | The Guardian
A lot has changed since Richard Herring premiered his show Christ On a Bike in 2001.. . .
But Herring soon turns this watery response into wine, deploying likably loopy reasoning to argue that Jesus healing 10 lepers wasn't compassionate, but cruelly inadequate. The end of the show undermines this, as Herring goes soppy about Christianity, arguing that love and democracy are equally faith-based and unverifiable.
. . .
It's as if the audience has been instructed Thou Shalt Merely Titter at his dismayed lit-crit job on the Ten Commandments, while other lines (such as the wannabe Christ-like edict "wank not, lest you be wanked") meet with the silence they deserve.
. . .
This week's new comedy All today's stories On the Guardian today Football Premier League clockwatch (aka Clocko®) Film Kevin Smith: 'I haven't taken my shirt off since I was nine' Stage Full English, please: will Broadway gobble up One Man, Two Guvnors?
. . .
I sympathise with Herring's effort to reclaim historical Jesus from the Christians.
. . .
We all know Brian Logan can't review Richard Herring without finding some kind of mealy-mouthed damning-with-faint- praise weasel-words way of twisting things around, but managing to not actually accuse him of racism this time is something.I saw the original Christ on a Bike yonks ago, must have been 01 or 02, looking forward to seeing it again in Jan!

He's also a very busy man.In the last year alone he's taken the Edinburgh Festival by storm with his new show What Is Love, Anyway? and then taken the same show on a nationwide tour.. . .
But that was only shortly after he finished touring the country with his critically acclaimed show, Christ on a Bike: The Second Coming and wrapped the latest season of his award-winning, Sony-nominated audio podcast and sketch show As It Occurs To Me. His new book How Not To Grow Up was also published and he released his second DVD, Christ On A Bike, following last year's release of Hitler Moustache.
