RYELAND SHEEP - NEW ZEALAND RARE BREEDS
In 1834 Professor Youatt noted that it would “endure privation of food better than any other breed”, while Sir Joseph Banks (the same eminent scientist who accompanied Cook on his first voyage to New Zealand in 1769) maintained that “Ryeland sheep deserve a niche in the temple of famine”.. . .
Introduced into New Zealand in 1901 (Otago Witness 5 June 1901), the Ryeland had a burst of popularity, contributing to the production of lambs for the overseas market, but there are now probably fewer than 500 remaining here.

Ryeland sheep
The flock is named after our cottage in North Yorkshire.. . .
There are now sufficient numbers of Ryeland sheep in the U.K. for it no longer to be a rare or minority breed here but it is a rare breed in other countries.

Drake Ryelands
Located beside the Dartmoor National Park the sheep are kept within 3 miles of Buckland Abbey, the former home of Sir Francis Drake, so the prefix 'Drake' is very apt.. . .
The ewes are easy to lamb and are very good mothers; it is not uncommon for them to produce twins.
. . .
The Rare Breeds Survival Trust gave the Ryeland a 'Minority Breed' status, meaning the breed was in decline and needed to be sustained.

A Coloured Ryeland Register was set up in 1989 allowing those interested in these sheep to register them.
. . .
The sheep were grazed on the sprouting crop to thicken it up and increase the rye yield.
. . .
A small breed of sheep, the Ryeland is hornless, white faced, with the fleece forming a tuft on the forehead which obscures the sheep's eyes.
. . .
The wool trade declined over the years until in the early 20th century when Ryeland sheep were practically extinct, and in 1903, the Ryeland Sheep Society was formed to protect the breed’s future survival.

coloured Ryeland sheep
Ma Ryeland, as we called the ewe, duly lambed in the spring of 1993 and had twins.. . .
Coloured Ryeland sheep share the placid temperament of their white cousins making them the ideal sheep for smallholders.
. . .
Ryeland sheep are kept in England, Scotland, Wales, the Netherlands, Australia and New Zealand.
. . .
Ryelands still produce top quality wool and, in the coloured Ryelands, this quality is further enhanced by the range of lovely natural colours.
. . .
One of them was black and, with great originality, we called him Blackie.

Shearing Show Sheep - Gracewood Ryeland Flock
These are particularly useful if don’t have a building for winter housing.. . .
They will return as good as new for only £3 for sharpening the comb and £2 each for the cutters.
. . .
If you find a good shearer, look after them and be prepared to pay on the basis of their time, not per head of sheep, as do the larger more commercial flocks.
. . .
More calories will be burnt keeping warm without the protection of the fleece and an increase in feed is helpful to compensate for this and to maintain condition.
. . .
My shearer took me on willingly, but after shearing my flock then said it was on the condition I never introduced him to any more Ryeland owners!
. . .
The Lister Protector comb can be bought for less than £20 and the specialist Camelid combs are more expensive at around £25 to £30.
