The First Minister unveiled a commemorative plaque following a tour of the new centre with the principal of North Highland College UHI, Rosemary Thompson.

The new centre will run as a fully operational hotel featuring six letting bedrooms, a 40-seat restaurant, production and training kitchens, and a private dining & conference lounge.

The project has been funded by the Scottish Funding Council, the European Regional Development Fund, Highlands and Islands Enterprise and the University of the Highlands and Islands Development Trust, the North British Hotels Trust and Dornoch Common Good Fund.

A later stage of the project will involve new student accommodation with 30 bedrooms and en-suite facilities, and the refurbishment of the extensive stable block complex to which Highland Council has already pledged ?200,000.

This in turn will ensure that they have both the attitude and aptitude required of the sector to harness Scotland's tourism potential and achieve their qualifications in half the time taken on a traditional college- based hospitality programme.

Staff in support areas engaged actively in self-evaluation and produced action plans to promote improvement.

Arrangements for monitoring and coordinating the development of guidance, sharing good practice across teams and evaluating the impact of services to support learners were inadequate.
